Where to Buy a Gas Fire Pit Online: Specialty Dealer vs Big Box vs Marketplace

Short answer

Buy a gas fire pit from a seller the manufacturer lists as an authorized dealer, because many manufacturer warranties require it — and where they do, that status, not price, decides whether your claim gets honored. Modern Flames writes it plainly: the warranty "only covers Products that are purchased through an authorized Modern Flames dealer or distributor." Freight damage handling, fuel configuration and parts supply split along the same line.

Disclosure, up front: Outdoor Heat Direct is a specialty fire feature dealer. We are one of the channels compared below, so we are an interested party and you should read us that way. Everything factual here is sourced to a document you can open yourself — a manufacturer warranty PDF, a manufacturer dealer page, or our own published shipping, returns and warranty policy. Where we could not verify something, we say so instead of filling the gap.

What are your four options for buying a gas fire pit online?

Gas fire pits and fire tables reach buyers through four channels, and they are structurally different businesses, not four storefronts selling the same thing.

Channel How it is set up Typical authorization status Strongest at Main tradeoff
Specialty fire feature dealer Narrow catalog, staff who sell only this category Usually authorized for the brands listed — verify on the manufacturer's page Pre-sale configuration and warranty standing Smaller catalog than a general retailer; no walk-in showroom
Big box retailer Huge catalog across every category; returns built around parcel-size goods Varies by brand and by item — verify per listing Return infrastructure and familiarity Limited category-specific staff; oversize freight is the exception to their normal flow
Marketplace listing Platform hosting third-party sellers; the platform sets transaction rules, the seller ships Depends on the individual seller, not the platform — verify the seller by name Selection breadth and platform-level buyer protection The party behind the listing, and its authorization status, can be hard to identify
Local pool, patio or landscape retailer Regional showroom with its own delivery truck and service radius Often authorized for the lines they stock Delivery, damage resolution and service after the sale Smaller selection; limited to a delivery radius

This table describes how each channel is typically structured. It is not a claim about any specific company, and authorization status is something you verify per seller and per brand.

None of these is automatically right. What changes between them is what happens after the money moves. That is the part this guide is about.

What is an authorized dealer, and why does it decide your warranty?

An authorized dealer is a retailer the manufacturer has signed an agreement with: it buys units direct, it is listed by the manufacturer, and it is the party the manufacturer will talk to about a claim. That last point is the practical one.

Manufacturers publish these lists. Modern Flames maintains a public page naming the online retailers it has authorized. American Fyre Designs runs a dealer locator. If a seller is not on the manufacturer's list, that is not an accusation of anything — it is just a fact you can check in two minutes before you spend $3,000.

The reason it matters is that a gas fire pit warranty is a manufacturer warranty, not a retailer warranty. Our own policy page says so directly: coverage is "provided by the manufacturer against manufacturing defects." The retailer is the channel through which the claim moves. If the manufacturer does not recognize the channel, you are holding a receipt and not much else.

What do the actual warranties say about where you bought it?

We read four warranties in September 2026. They do not all say the same thing, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Modern Flames is the most explicit: "This warranty only covers Products that are purchased through an authorized Modern Flames dealer or distributor on or after 9/1/2021." Its warranty is also non-transferable — "Warranty is only valid while product remains with the original purchaser" — and it requires you to "contact Modern Flames first in order to trouble shoot or diagnose fireplace," then go back to your installing dealer.

American Fyre Designs ties the claim to the dealer and the paperwork: "THIS WARRANTY APPLIES TO THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER WITH INVOICE OR PROOF OF PURCHASE AND TO SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENTIAL USE ONLY. FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THIS WARRANTY, OR TO PLACE A WARRANTY CLAIM CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED AMERICAN FYRE DESIGNS™ DEALER." Coverage runs three years on GFRC exterior components and one year on valves, burners, electrical components and controls, batteries excluded.

The Outdoor Plus does not use authorized-dealer language in its 2025 product warranty. What it does say is that "the product warranty is only valid for the original owner and does not transfer or reset with a change in ownership," that "the original purchase information will be required," and that any ignition system purchased separately from a kit is not covered at all. Burner rings and burner bars carry a lifetime warranty; stainless and aluminum pans five years residential; electronics, gas valves and pilot assemblies one year residential.

Prism Hardscapes we could not verify. The warranty document was not reachable from an automated fetch at the time of writing, so we are not going to characterize it. Ask us or ask Prism Hardscapes directly before you rely on it.

Takeaway: two of the four warranties we read name the dealer explicitly. All four require you to prove who you are and what you bought. None of them care what the item cost.

The expensive mistake: signing a clean delivery receipt. Freight carriers treat your signature as acceptance of the shipment in good condition. Our policy requires you to "Carefully Examine Each Package For Damage," note damage on the delivery receipt, have the driver note it on your copy, and take pictures. "Damage not reported within 48 hours will result in the claim being denied." A 20-second inspection is the difference between a replaced fire table and a $3,000 loss — and this is true no matter which retailer you bought from.

Why does a 48-inch GFRC fire table ship by freight instead of parcel?

Because it is a slab of glass fiber reinforced concrete with a stainless burner in it. The Prism Hardscapes and American Fyre Designs tables in our fire pit catalog are GFRC units, and GFRC is heavy enough that the whole delivery model changes. Our shipping policy caps threshold delivery — to your first dry area — at 500 lb, and white glove service is unavailable for items over 83 inches or 800 lb. Those thresholds exist because real units hit them.

Worth saying plainly: most of these manufacturers do not publish shipping weights. The 2026 American Fyre Designs catalog lists dimensions and BTU ratings and no weights at all. If a listing anywhere tells you a GFRC table's exact shipping weight, ask where the number came from.

What freight means in practice: the carrier calls to schedule an appointment, the unit arrives on a truck with a lift gate, and it lands at the curb unless you paid for more. You inspect before you sign. That is a different transaction from a box left on your porch, and it is why the damage process below is not the same as a return.

What happens when something goes wrong?

Everyone compares price and shipping speed. Almost nobody compares failure modes, which is the comparison that actually costs money. Here is how the four channels differ structurally on the five things that go wrong.

What goes wrong Specialty dealer Big box retailer Marketplace listing Local pool / patio retailer
Arrives damaged on the truck Dealer files the freight claim with the carrier and the manufacturer; you supply photos and the noted delivery receipt Handled under the retailer's returns process; freight claim handling varies by store and by item Depends entirely on the individual seller and the platform's protection terms — read them before ordering Usually delivered on the retailer's own truck, so damage is settled directly and fast
Burner fails at 8 months Manufacturer warranty claim through the dealer named on your invoice Typically outside the return window; routed to the manufacturer, which will ask who sold it Same, and the manufacturer may ask whether the seller was authorized before opening a claim Manufacturer warranty claim through the retailer, often with a local service visit
You ordered the wrong fuel type Caught pre-sale most of the time; after shipping it is a return, not a swap, because it is a different SKU Return under store policy; restocking and return freight usually apply on oversize items Return under seller policy; return freight on a 400 lb item is the sticking point Often caught at the counter before the order is placed
A part is missing from the box Dealer ships the part or pulls it from the manufacturer Often resolved as a full return and re-order rather than a part Seller-dependent; sometimes a full return is the only route offered Usually pulled from local stock same week
You need a replacement part at year 3 Dealer still stocks the brand and can order by part number Item may have been discontinued from assortment; parts are rarely carried Original seller may no longer be listing the brand at all Still carries the brand if the relationship held

This table describes how each channel is structured, not how any specific company behaves. Some marketplace sellers and some big box sellers are authorized dealers with excellent service. Check the specific seller, not the logo above it.

Not sure your gas line will run the model you want?

Tell us the burner BTU, the run length and the pipe size. We will tell you if it works before you order, not after the truck leaves.

Ask our team Read customer reviews

Can you ask "will my gas line run this?" before you buy?

This is the single most useful difference between channels, and it is invisible on a product page.

Here is a concrete decision that flips on the answer. You want a 65,000 BTU/hr natural gas fire table — the Prism Hardscapes Embarcadero 48-inch runs exactly that. Your gas meter is 70 feet from the patio and the existing stub is half-inch pipe that already feeds a grill. A dealer who knows the category asks about total connected load and pipe run, points out that natural gas appliances need roughly 7 inches of water column at the appliance (propane wants about 11), and tells you this is a job for a licensed technician sizing the line under the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1 / NFPA 54.

Two outcomes. Either you budget for a three-quarter-inch run and order the natural gas model, or you order the propane version with a tank enclosure and skip the plumber entirely. Both are fine. Ordering the natural gas unit first and finding out afterward is not fine, because it is a return, not a conversion.

What happens if you order the wrong fuel type?

You get a different product, not a wrong option. On a gas fire table, fuel type is built into the SKU. In our own catalog, a Prism Hardscapes table's variants read "Natural Gas / Pewter" or "Propane / Café" — fuel and finish together define the unit that gets built and shipped.

That is why the return cost is real. Shipping a 400 lb GFRC table back across the country to swap an orifice and a valve is not economical, which is why our returns policy carries a 25% restocking fee, requires the item to be clean, unused and in original packaging, and puts return and reshipping cost on the buyer. Those terms are not unusual for freight goods; they are the reason getting the order right the first time is worth a phone call.

Some American Fyre Designs models are propane only. Some units can be field converted with a manufacturer kit and some cannot. Our natural gas versus propane guide works through the tradeoffs, and the ignition comparison covers the other configuration choice that is baked into the SKU.

Why is the price almost the same everywhere?

Because many premium fire feature manufacturers enforce a MAP policy. MAP stands for Minimum Advertised Price: the manufacturer sets the lowest price a dealer may publicly advertise, and dealers who break it typically risk their authorization. It is a common arrangement in this category.

The consequence is worth internalizing. Where a MAP policy is in force, comparing the same table across five authorized dealers will usually return five identical numbers. Price is therefore almost never the deciding variable here — and a price that is dramatically below everyone else is a signal to check authorization status, not a bargain to grab.

Our price match policy says the same thing from the other side: we match "the item price but excludes shipping charges and taxes," and the competitor "must be an Authorized Retailer of the product in question, and respectful of the manufacturer's MAP policy." If price is genuinely tight for you, financing moves the monthly number more than hunting for a discount that MAP will not allow anyone to offer.

What should you check before buying from any seller?

Run this on whatever site you are about to buy from, including ours. Eight questions, about five minutes.

# Check How to verify it Answer that should stop you
1 Is the seller an authorized dealer for this brand? Open the manufacturer's dealer locator or authorized online dealer page and look for the name Not listed, and the seller cannot say why
2 Who administers the warranty claim? Ask directly: do I call you or the manufacturer first? "Contact the manufacturer" with no further help
3 What is the freight damage procedure and deadline? Find it in writing on the site before ordering No published damage window at all
4 Is there a real phone number with a human on it? Call it before you order and ask a technical question Chat widget only, or no pre-sale technical answer
5 Does the listing publish complete specs? BTU/hr, dimensions, fuel type, ignition type, material Marketing copy with no BTU rating
6 Is fuel type actually configurable? Look for natural gas and propane as selectable options One fixed SKU with no fuel choice shown
7 What is the real lead time? Ask for in-stock status and ship window in writing "Usually ships soon" with no date
8 What does delivery actually include? Curbside, threshold or white glove — and the cost of each Freight cost revealed only after checkout

Frequently asked questions

Does buying from an unauthorized seller really void the warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer. Modern Flames states its warranty "only covers Products that are purchased through an authorized Modern Flames dealer or distributor on or after 9/1/2021." American Fyre Designs routes claims through "your authorized American Fyre Designs dealer." The Outdoor Plus 2025 warranty does not use that language but does require original purchase information. Check the specific brand.

How do I check whether a retailer is an authorized dealer?

Go to the manufacturer's website and look for a dealer locator or an authorized online dealers page. Modern Flames publishes a list of its authorized online retailers by name. American Fyre Designs runs a dealer locator. If the seller you are considering is not listed, email the manufacturer and ask before ordering.

Is a gas fire pit cheaper on a marketplace or at a big box store?

Usually not meaningfully, because many premium manufacturers enforce Minimum Advertised Price policies that hold the advertised number the same across authorized dealers. A price far below everyone else generally means either an unauthorized seller, a discontinued model, or a different SKU than the one you think you are comparing.

What do I do if my fire table arrives damaged?

Do not sign a clean receipt. Examine each package before the driver leaves, note the damage on the delivery receipt, have the driver note it on your copy, and photograph everything. Open packaging immediately to check for concealed damage. Report it to your retailer within 48 hours — past that window, our policy states the claim will be denied.

Why does a fire table ship by freight instead of UPS or FedEx?

GFRC fire tables are heavy, oversized concrete units. Our shipping policy caps threshold delivery at 500 lb and excludes white glove service on items over 83 inches or 800 lb, which tells you the size range involved. Freight means a scheduled appointment, a lift gate, and inspection before you sign.

Can I convert a natural gas fire pit to propane after it arrives?

Sometimes, with a manufacturer conversion kit, and sometimes not at all — some American Fyre Designs models are propane only. Fuel type is part of the SKU, not a checkbox. Treat it as a permanent decision made before you order, and have any conversion performed by a licensed technician.

Is a local pool or landscape retailer better than buying online?

For service after the sale, a local authorized retailer with its own delivery truck is hard to beat, especially on damage and missing parts. The tradeoffs are selection and price transparency. If the model you want is not something they stock, an authorized online specialty dealer gives you the same warranty standing with a wider catalog.

What warranty length should I expect on a gas fire pit?

It varies by component, not by unit. American Fyre Designs covers GFRC exterior components three years and valves, burners and electrical one year. The Outdoor Plus covers burner rings and burner bars for life, pans five years residential, and electronics and gas valves one year residential. Read the component table, not the headline number.

Does the warranty transfer if I sell my house?

Generally no. The Outdoor Plus states its warranty "is only valid for the original owner and does not transfer or reset with a change in ownership." Modern Flames states it "is only valid while product remains with the original purchaser." American Fyre Designs limits coverage to the original purchaser with invoice or proof of purchase.

What should I have ready before I call a dealer about a fire pit?

Fuel type available at the property, distance from the gas meter or tank to the patio, existing pipe size, the surface it will sit on, and your clearance distances to walls and overheads. With those five, a dealer can tell you in one call whether a model works, what it needs, and what the installation will involve.

Sources and accuracy note. Warranty language quoted from the Modern Flames warranty statement PDF (modernflames.com), the American Fyre Designs 2026 Product Catalog PDF (americanfyredesigns.com), and The Outdoor Plus 2025 Product Warranty PDF (theoutdoorplus.com), all read September 2026. Authorized online dealer listing from the Modern Flames "Purchase Online" page. Shipping, damage, return and price match terms quoted from our own published shipping, returns and warranty and price match pages. Gas pressure figures (7 in. w.c. natural gas, 11 in. w.c. propane) and the National Fuel Gas Code reference, ANSI Z223.1 / NFPA 54, are standard industry values confirmed across manufacturer installation manuals.

Not verified: the Prism Hardscapes warranty document was not retrievable at the time of writing and is deliberately not characterized above. Shipping weights for GFRC fire tables are not published by these manufacturers; we cite our own published delivery weight thresholds instead of estimating unit weights. Channel comparisons describe how each type of retailer is structured and do not describe the conduct of any named company — individual sellers within every channel vary, including authorized ones.

Installation: gas line sizing, conversion and connection must be performed by a licensed technician in accordance with local code. Nothing here is installation instruction. Questions about a specific model and a specific property: contact our team.
