What Size Fire Table Do I Need? Seating, Clearance and Lip Width

Why is the lip — not the footprint — the number that picks your fire table?

Two tables can both measure 48 inches across and behave like different furniture. The Outdoor Plus sells exactly that pair. The 48 in Sedona Narrow Ledge has a 40 in burn area inside a 48 in diameter, leaving roughly 4 in of ledge per side. The 48 in Sedona Wide Ledge drops the burn area to 29 in and leaves about 9½ in. Same footprint, same 215 lb, same 65,000 BTU/hr. The wide version is $4,497 against $3,487 — $1,010 bought entirely with ledge.

That ledge is the only surface on the table, and it is the thermal buffer between the burner plate and your shins. Four inches holds a beer can if nobody bumps the table. Twelve inches holds dinner.

How do you size a fire table in ten minutes with a tape measure?

Four measurements, in this order, taken outside with the furniture where it will live. Skipping step two is why people end up sidestepping their own fire table on the way to the grill.

The 36 in walkway figure is standard patio circulation guidance. The 30 in per person is our own working number, set above the 24 in furniture-industry dining minimum because lounge chairs are wider than dining chairs.

What size fire table do I need for 4, 6 or 8 people?

Divide the table perimeter by 30 in. A 48 in square gives 192 in, or six seats on paper — four to six in practice, because corners are dead space. A 48 in circle gives 151 in with no dead corners. Prices below are ours, current.

How much open space does a fire table actually need?

Footprint plus 36 inches on every side people walk on. If the table sits against a wall or behind a sectional, that side does not count. Two worked examples with the same table:

Run the Tavola 3 through an 8 × 8 ft space and the math kills it: 96 in minus 48 in leaves 24 in per side, a third under the walkway minimum. It fits. You will hit your shin on it nightly. What is the real lip width on the fire tables we sell?

Manufacturers call it ledge width, edge width or surface. It is the same measurement. Where a model lists two figures, the first is the long side and the second is the end. These come straight from the published spec sheets on our product pages.

The two Sedona lip figures are our own calculation: published outer diameter minus published burn-area diameter, divided by two, because The Outdoor Plus publishes burn area rather than ledge width. Note the Tavola 8: 13 in on one pair of edges and 8 in on the other. One table, two usable surfaces — and the wide side is where you seat the people holding plates. That never shows up in a footprint spec.

Should the fire table be square, round or rectangular?

Shape follows the furniture, not the yard. A sectional or two facing sofas define a long axis that a square table wastes — go rectangular. Four loose chairs have no axis, so a square or round table reads correctly from every seat. Round is safest in a tight space: no corners to catch a hip, and the most usable edge per square foot. Arrange the furniture first, then measure. Doing it the other way round is how patios end up with a walkway on one side and 12 inches on the other. Does the fire table height have to match my seating?

It has to match the seat height, and most people never check. A fire table behaves like a coffee table: the lip should sit near or just above the cushion, not at your chest.

Measure your cushion height with someone sitting on it. Compressed seat height on outdoor cushions routinely lands 2 to 3 inches below the showroom number.

Does a bigger fire table put out more heat?

No. Nearly every Prism Hardscapes fire table runs 65,000 BTU/hr, whether it is the 36 in Tavola 2 or the 80 in Tavola 5; only the 90 in Tavola 6 and 110 in Tavola 110 step up to 90,000 BTU/hr. The Outdoor Plus Sedona is 65,000 BTU/hr in both 48 in and 60 in. A longer table spreads the same flame over more surface. Will the table you picked fit through your gate?

Glass fiber reinforced concrete is not light. The 80 in Tavola 5 ships at 650 lb, the Tavola 4 at 500 lb, the Tavola 3 and Porto 58 at 450 lb each, the Rotondo at 430 lb. Prism Hardscapes has moved several models to a lighter body — the 90 in Tavola 6 is down to 418 lb, the 60 in Tavola 8 to 228 lb — but none is a two-person carry over a step.

What clearances do you still have to check after the tape measure?

The table also has to clear combustibles, and there is no single industry number.
