Why does a fire pit cost more than the price tag says?

Because you are not buying one thing. You are buying four, and only the first one has a price tag on the product page.

The pattern in our support tickets is always the same. Somebody budgets $3,000, picks a fire table, then a plumber quotes $1,600 to get gas from the meter to the far corner of the patio. That trench was never in the budget. On a natural gas job it can cost more than the table — Budget 2 below shows exactly that. Split the cost into four layers and the surprise disappears.

Layer 1: how much does the fire pit itself cost?

Two things stand out. 41% of the catalog sits above $3,000 — the market is heavier at the top than most buying guides admit. Layer 2: what do the options actually add?

This is where quoted prices and final prices separate. Every number below is a real delta between two variants of the same product in our catalog — same table, same size, one option changed.

Layer 3: what does the installation cost in 2026?

This is the layer that ruins budgets. None of it appears on a product page, and on a natural gas job it is often the biggest single number after the appliance.

A 30-foot run is a cheap job: roughly $600 plus a $150 permit. A 60-foot run to the back of the yard, at the top of the range, is $1,500 plus permit. Same table, $900 apart, decided entirely by where your meter sits.

Layer 4: what does it actually cost to burn?

At 65,000 BTU/hr — the most common output in the category — natural gas costs $0.96 per hour and propane costs $1.87 per hour. Those come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: $15.34 per Mcf residential natural gas (2025 annual average) and $2.63 per gallon residential propane (January–March 2026).

A realistic season is three hours a night, two nights a week, for six months: 156 hours.

Our own calculation, not a manufacturer figure. Assumes 65,000 BTU/hr at full output and a 20 lb propane tank holding 430,000 BTU (4.7 gallons, 6.6 hours). Tank exchange programs typically deliver 15 lb, not 20 — budget more tanks if you swap rather than refill.

The gap is the point. Over five seasons natural gas saves about $710 in fuel — enough to pay for a 30-foot trench; over ten, a 60-foot one. That is the real math behind natural gas vs propane, and it flips the usual advice: propane is cheaper to install and more expensive to own.

Budget 1: what does a propane setup cost, start to finish?

For a homeowner with an existing level patio who wants fire this weekend and no contractor involved.

Layer 3 is genuinely zero here. That is propane's entire argument, and it is a good one. The cost reappears in layer 4, every year, forever.

Budget 2: what does a mid-range natural gas setup cost?

A 36-inch concrete fire bowl on a new pad, 60 feet from the meter at the back of the yard. This is the budget that breaks people.

Layer 3 totals $2,025. Layer 1 totals $1,822. The trench, the permit and the pad cost more than the fire bowl. Nobody tells you this before you pick a finish color, and it is the single most useful number in this article. Move the same bowl 30 feet closer to the meter and layer 3 drops to roughly $1,275 — a $750 swing for walking the yard with a tape measure.

Budget 3: what does a premium electronic-ignition setup cost?

Here layer 2 ($3,287) is larger than layer 1 ($3,155). The options cost more than the table. Electronic ignition alone accounts for $2,571 of it, and it drags a $600 electrician along with it — a cost that exists only because you chose that ignition. Where should you save, and where should you never save?

Save on the finish. Ultra White on a Prism Hardscapes Tavola 3 costs $934 more than Pewter. It is a pigment. In two seasons of pollen, soot and rain it will not look the way it looked in the studio photo. Standard colors age better and cost 30% less.

Save on the wind guard, at first. $380–$696 is real money for a part you may not need. Burn one windy evening without it, then decide. It bolts on later.

Shop the band, not the model. Half the gap between two similar tables is finish and ignition, not size or build. Compare $1,000–$1,999 against $3,000 and up and you will find the same tables in both, wearing different options.

Never save on gas line diameter. An undersized line starves the burner, and the only fix is re-trenching the entire run. The pipe is the cheap part of that job.

Never save on the permit. $100–$300 buys an inspection and a paper trail. Unpermitted gas work is a problem when you sell the house and a bigger one if there is ever an insurance claim.

What does it cost to change your mind later?

Match lit to electronic ignition: effectively the full option price, $820–$3,280 by brand and system, plus a $250–$900 circuit. Most manufacturers build ignition into the pan assembly, so a retrofit means a new burner assembly, not a bolt-on module. Ask us before assuming it is possible on your model.

Propane to natural gas: a conversion kit changes the orifice, but the expensive half is layer 3 — the trench, the permit, the inspection. Budget $600–$1,700 for the line on a typical run. Some units cannot be converted at all; the fuel type is fixed at the factory.

Moving the unit: a propane table moves for the cost of two friends and a furniture dolly. A natural gas table does not move. The line terminates where it terminates, and relocating it is a second trench at full price. Decide the location before the first one is dug.
